Whilst honing, if I already push my knife away from my hand, do I still need to push the knife towards my hand?

Doubtless it's safer to push knives away from hands. I always hone like this GIF. Source for first image below.

But I just saw these images where the knife is being pushed TOWARDS the handle and your hand! Source for image 3.

  1. Why would you push the knife towards your hand?

  2. Do I gain anything by pushing the knife towards my hand? Does proper honing require me to push the knife away AND towards my hand?

I'm trying to hone my Wusthof knife with my Grosche Zweissen 12 in. Ceramic Honing Steel.

As the later pictures are all still, it isn't clear to me that the knives are being pushed towards the hand. They might just as well be being drawn away from the body, so the blade's edge is moving 'backwards' over the honing surface. That's how I usually sharpen knives, on the basis that the blade is less likely to get caught in any imperfections in the sharpening stone (and the tiny risk of slipping and cutting a nearby object is reduced even further).
