Why would you add yogurt to brew Bengal Style Fish Curry?

I inserted a yellow line next to the second last para. below. Why add yogurt to concoct spicy curry? Yogurt and curry just don't mix together, in my mind. Never would I have thought to combine them!

Add onion; cook. stirring, until golden, about 5 minutes. Stir in Spice Paste; cook, stirring, for 4 minutes. Stir in yogurt and 1/2 cup of water. Add green chili peppers; cover and simmer for 5 minutes.

Canadian Living: Fish & Seafood (2016). p 135.

I am from India and I can tell you why yoghurt is used in spicy curries.Ofcourse I am a vegetarian but this applies to all spicy curries.

Yoghurt is used to calm down the spices added in your curry. It brings a new juicy sour flavour which many people relish while eating. If you don't add yoghurt there is a possibility of you spitting fire from your throat(I mean the spices may burn you).Generally yoghurt is added at the end of your dish preparation(as you mentioned),see that you don't spoil the taste by not beating it smooth or over adding it.
